Our Story
Côte Ouest translates to 'west coast,' and our bistro embodies the very best from two exceptional locales — bringing together the culinary traditions of France's western regions with the extraordinary ingredients of California's coast.
Côte Ouest Bistro is a modern French bistro, born from the shared vision of Laurent Monchicourt and Martin Sarrailh. In April 2021, this dynamic duo breathed new life into the former Baker Street Bistro, transforming it into a 21st-century neighborhood haven.
But the story of Côte Ouest truly began over two decades ago. Fresh from culinary school in his native Brittany, France, Laurent Monchicourt embarked on his career at Baker Street Bistro, immersing himself in the art of hospitality. He then spent the next twenty years refining his expertise in some of San Francisco's most celebrated dining establishments, including Michael Mina, La Folie, and Petit Crenn, as well as beloved French institutions like L'Ardoise, Clementine, and Chapeau. Throughout this journey, Laurent discovered his true passion: recreating the warm and inviting ambiance he cherished in his youth – a place where friends, family, and neighbors gather to savor exceptional food and wine in delightful company.
The next chapter unfolded where many great partnerships are forged: on the golf course. Longtime friends and golfing companions, Laurent and chef Martin Sarrailh learned that "the Baker" was available, recognizing the perfect opportunity to combine their talents and establish an authentic French bistro.
Born and raised in Béarn, France, Martin is driven by a deep commitment to sourcing the finest ingredients, transforming them into simple yet exquisite dishes. He firmly believes that, in cuisine as in life, dedication and quality yield exceptional results. This philosophy was instilled in him during his upbringing in southwest France, a region renowned for its abundant seafood and agricultural riches, much like California's own west coast. Martin previously brought this culinary vision to life as the executive chef of Sausalito's Le Garage, where his creations garnered widespread acclaim.
At the heart of Laurent and Martin's partnership lies a shared dream: to create a restaurant that embraces guests like family, offering a haven where they can delight in delectable food and wine, surrounded by warm companionship. The revitalized space, expertly curated by Laurent, embodies the French spirit of "joie de vivre." Here, guests are invited to savor refined cuisine, perfectly paired wines, and the pure pleasure of connecting with those around them.
